Maybe where you're from. If that's a no, then it's unclear how you received my message.

Something about celebrating their "traditions" yet this was the first any of us had heard of those traditions. They loathe Sleepers — that's us, those who Sodder brought here — but last month was unusual even by their standards. They lured in the unwary with false kindness and many were drugged, some were killed. They target adults and children alike.

They're back to what passes for normal now, as far as I can tell. This doesn't mean they're non-violent. Be careful of them.

[ ... They also embody every sexist, racist, and homophobic 1950s America stereotype, as the newcomer will undoubtedly discover for themself. Despite their appearances, the townspeople are neither subtle nor harmless with their bigotry.

Hoping maybe now the stranger will actually introduce themself, he adds: ]
My designation is KD6-3.7. [ You know, the same as his username. Because robots aren't creative. ]

lol they're practically synonymous in deerington

Are you also a synthetic? An android or AI? You have a name. You must be special.

[ Oh Martin, why you gotta get his dumb robot hopes up like that? Enjoy crushing them now. ]

I think everyone has more or less recovered physically, myself included. Death isn't necessarily permanent here. Sleepers get brought back, but at a cost. I'm not sure of the specifics beyond sickness and memory loss.

And some Sleepers do vanish. No one seems to know what happens to them.

Oh.

[ Probably just as well Martin can't see his momentarily stricken expression that dissolves into disappointment. License number. Right. ]

Yes. That's my serial number. I have no name by which to introduce myself.

It's mainly the pastel ones, the others will probably avoid you on their own. But the townspeople aren't the only thing to be concerned about. A lot of strange things happen here. You may have noticed the spinning wheels. Or the pigs. The inexplicably appearing mirrors everywhere... Things are likely to escalate soon.

As far as I've observed and personally experienced, these kinds of changes are normally temporary. So they should wear off eventually.

Hopefully before anyone decides to try eating the pigs.

[ Because that'd be right in line with what happened last month, with the "meat" pies the townspeople were serving... But he isn't sure whether he should get into those specifics with the newcomer. It might only serve to upset him rather than help. ]

It's all right.

My handler never named me.

[ MARTIN WHY.

The question has K mentally recoiling for reasons he doesn't care to examine too closely at the moment. ]

No. My owner.

I'm not offended. You had no way of knowing, regardless.

[ Truthfully, now K feels a bit bad for evidently upsetting Martin, the very thing he'd been trying not to do. ]

You've been very considerate, Martin. I appreciate it. Not many people are, toward my kind.

If it makes you feel better, I'd prefer to not have to kill anyone. But I would like to be able to protect the people I care about, and not be a liability to them when I'm unable to protect myself.

[ That's a lot more personal information than he'd normally share with a perfect stranger, but it feels important that his motives are understood. He'd hardly become an indiscriminate murderer. ]

So you're really not hacking the network? This is the first time it's glitched like this, to my knowledge.

I suppose it could've been worse. I'm glad you replied.
