[Video! God, it's been ages since he's seen anything like this. Never mind the apocalypse, the signal at Daisy's safehouse had been atrocious. Martin revels in the relative novelty of it.]
Ah, that's so cool! Um... any cute animals? Or cool ones. Or just... interesting flowers and fruit? I sometimes forget to just stop and admire things. Like, this is a vacation destination, right? Or it... was. It is pretty. [Even if it's uncomfortably warm.]
Jet and I made it to the river up north. Have to head into the jungle. Did you come by this way at all? There's this massive waterfall that goes over the cliffs. I bet it'd be gorgeous at sunset. Like your flower.
Pretty in a Jurassic Park way. [ If Martin knows the reference. K's seen others mention it and it was known in the Meadous, so he assumes it exists across the multiverse. ] Cute and cool animals, interesting scenery, I'll see what I can do. I know what you mean. It is nice taking a moment to appreciate the view every now and then.
[ The smile that's been audible in his voice now becomes visible when he turns the camera to face him out of a sense of politeness. They're having a conversation, after all. ]
That does sound striking. I haven't seen it yet, but I'd like to. [ Much like Martin himself; they really are like ships in the night here, always missing each other in person. And that thought makes him suddenly realise: ] Oh— and hello! [ He gives the camera a little wave with his free hand. Surprise! He's not a disembodied AI trapped in a walkie. He just wishes he could see Martin, too. ]
[Oh. Hello. K is more humanoid then he'd been picturing. He probably couldn't even tell the man was an android without having been told. Even with the grainy camera, Martin can see he has a handsome face. A good strong jaw. A very nice smile.
Right. He doesn't need to be admiring the view like that.]
H-hello! It's great to be able to see you. In black and white, at least! Jet's got an interesting thingy to screw into his transceiver, too. We're not actually sure what it... does? It screams like mad any time he's holding it, but it seems like it's fine when it's me?
[ Is Jet's upgrade a metal detector lolGreat to be able to see him — aw. That just has K smiling all the more, in a way that lights up his whole face. ] Wish I could say the same. Though it's always good hearing from you.
That's odd. Why should it make any difference who's holding it... [ He thinks on that for a moment. Sounds like it could have something to do with proximity. A tracking device of some kind? ] Unless maybe our walkies are specifically keyed to us in some way. Biometric locks are the norm where I'm from, could be something like that. Meaning his transceiver could detect when someone who's not him is using it. [ But why would it only stop making noise in that case? Doesn't make much sense. ]
Have you tried plugging the device into your transceiver? Does it make noise at you then?
One day... [Hopefully, they'll meet up one day. And then Martin can be awkward at him in-person.]
Could be! And let me check on changing who has it plugged in.
[There's a few minutes between Martin's messages.]
O...kay, so it's not the transceiver. I think it just doesn't like Jet. [Martin has his own theories on why that may be.] It also screeches randomly sometimes, too. Next time it goes off, I want to see if maybe it's a signal trying to lead us somewhere?
[ One day! K will undoubtedly find the awkwardness kind of endearing, so it's all good. ]
Huh. [ Having never met Jet in person yet, either, K doesn't have the faintest inkling about why the metal detector transceiver attachment would only react to him, and randomly. (Which is a shame, because it'd probably be nice to not always feel so alone surrounded by humans.) ] Now you've got me invested, I wanna know what its purpose is too.
Good plan— just be careful. It could lead you right into trouble. How are you two doing out there so far?
Surprisingly okay? We haven't hit anything that wants to eat us, but we're keeping as much to the shore as we can. The river's about the most dangerous thing we've seen, and that's more for how fast and big it is near the mouth.
What about you? All as well as it can be? You were just getting back to the base as I left, I remember.
Sounds like you're finally having a stroke of good luck. About time.
[ Instead of answering Martin's question right away, K's smiling as he turns the camera toward his surroundings, offering Martin a scenic view as he continues walking. Though he intermittently turns the camera back to face himself as he recites: ]
I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: A poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company: I gazed — and gazed — but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.
[ He's quiet for a few moments afterward. Then finally answers Martin. ]
Stayed a night at the base and I'm already back out travelling, with Senku now. He's managed to arrange a meeting with someone on the island — not the Pacairs, and not the cabin creature. Someone solitary, and very protective of their "territory". I'm sort of Senku's plus one.
[ Not only to make sure he survives the trip and encounter, but to possibly act in a diplomatic capacity if needed. Senku is Senku; his tendency toward pragmatism and bluntness at the cost of social graces can sometimes lead to trouble. And he's self-aware of that fact, so K got invited. ]
[While K won't see, Jet might have a view of Martin blushing as he listens. Wordsworth!]
Oh... oh, that's lovely! [Don't sound like too much of a fanboy. Dont.] I haven't heard that poem in ages. I can't remember all of it, but...
Welcome joy, and welcome sorrow, Lethe's weed and Hermes' feather; Come to-day, and come to-morrow, I do love you both together! I love to mark sad faces in fair weather; And hear a merry laugh amid the thunder; Fair and foul I love together.
Let me see; and let me write Of the day, and of the night – Both together: – let me slake All my thirst for sweet heart-ache! Let my bower be of yew, Interwreath’d with myrtles new; Pines and lime-trees full in bloom, And my couch a low grass-tomb.
[There's a solid bit of that poem he's missing in the middle, but it's a lot of words, and he's not like Jon, able to spout them all out on the spot. His recitation is a bit halting, as well, but it feels like he should give K something back for such a lovely 'reading.']
Right, but. Right. Okay. You're out and about. Cool! Who's the person you're meeting with?
